Town’s final preseason friendly is a home friendly against Southern League Central Premier Division AFC Rushden & Diamonds at Elderstubbs on the 5th September, kick off is at 3pm.
Several ex Town players have signed on again for the Diamonds this season. Former Cobblers defender and Town captain, Liam Dolman, will long be remembered for his excellent performance in the FA Cup tie at Chesterfield. The sides were locked at 0 0 when injury in the 55th minute forced “Bully” to leave the pitch to a standing ovation both sets of fans. Like Bully, Goalkeeper Ben Heath made over 70 appearances for the Town. Striker Tom Lorraine, also played at Chesterfield and is now approaching 300 appearances and 100 goals for the Diamonds, defender Jack Ashton who has had a couple of spells here on loan whilst returning from injury, Midfielders Micheal Gyasi and Ben Farrell have also made appearances for Town in recent years. Diamonds Assistant Manager Neil Champelovier is also a familiar face as Darren Foster’s No 2 during his reign at the then know Communications Park.
Town’s players are not without links to our welcome visitors. Last season’s top goal scorer Jack Bowen signed from Diamonds last Autumn and hopefully he will have recovered from the injury he picked in the friendly at ON Chenecks. Manager Arron Parkinson and Assistant Manager Matt Finlay both joined the Town from Diamonds and competitive midfielder Adam Confue and Aaron King also spent the majority of one season as the newly reformed club began their way back up the leagues.
Other players who have worn both team’s colours include Tommy Berwick, Russ Dunkley, Claudiu Hoban, Elliott Lamb Johnson, Paul Lamb, Oli Wilkinson, Joe Merrill, Nabil Shariff, Alfie Taylor, Joe Curtis, Joe Henderson, to name but a few.
