The United Counties League Premier Division title final assault began in perfect fashion on Saturday afternoon as goals from Taylor Orosz and Kieran Fitzgerald made it a winning one in the penultimate home game of the 2018/19 season.
With an emotional edgy atmosphere around Elderstubbs, the players ensured it was an occasion to remember with a fairly comfortable victory, made all the more important as Deeping Rangers came back from behind to beat Harborough Town.
Orosz broke the deadlock 20 minutes after half-time before a deserved victory was secured when Fitzgerald swept home in the 90th minute.
Both sides had sights of goal within the opening few minutes, Adam Creaney’s free kick rattled the crossbar only for Fitzgerald’s rebound blocked when perhaps he should have done better. It was mostly one-way traffic during the first period and all heading towards the Northern Star goal as we went close again on 13 minutes when Creaney’s set piece into the area was met by Tom McGowan downward header and Fitzgerald scuffed his shot over. McGowan glanced a header which was easy for the Peterborough keeper Dyaln Cliffe and, on 34 minutes, Fitzgerald was brought down on the right of the area and Creaney’s fizzing set piece was just about kept out by Cliffe.
A rare attack from the visitors ended with Kieran Blanchard dragging wide, while one of our clearest openings came right at the end of the period. Excellent work saw McGowan win possession inside our half, Emery slid a pass in to Orosz who was surging down the left into the area but for some reason he chose to place the ball handsomely over the bar.
So it was all square at the break and it was the visitors with the opening chance of the second half when James Seekings somehow saw his effort parried by Lustin Cerga around his far post from 3 yards. But 20 minutes after the restart the first goal arrived. After a scrappy spell of play, Adam Confue won the ball back midway inside the Peterborough half and pinged a pass out to Emery. The striker held the ball up, before flicking to Creaney, who’s first touch found Orosz who attacked the defence with menace, cut inside and fired past Cliffe.
It should have been 2-0 in the 68th minute when McGowan’s ball out from defence put Emery immediately in on goal, but the usually prolific frontman fired wide.
Emery this time tested the side netting with a rasping angled drive in another on-on-one situation. Peterborough had a late flourish, Jake Sansby’s shot bringing a smart save out of Cerga before substitute Harry Brooks headed wide from six yards out.
What seemed to be the final chance of the game, fell to the hosts as Confue picking out substitute Phil Cassidy with a fine cross-field pass, the midfielder showing excellent control before rifling a shot which Cliffe saved well.
The final twist came as we broke through again to double our lead with seconds remaining. Fitzgerald released Anayiotos down the right flank, he twisted and turned Matthew Coxy inside out and although he looked to be going no where, the midfielder ran the ball to Fitzgerald who drove home from eight yards past Cliffe.
Cue the celebrations as the victory meant Deeping need to close a 9 point gap with 3 games remaining, and a twenty six gap in goal difference. The mathematicians will say there is still a possibility, so a point at Pinchbeck next Saturday will seal any chance of being caught, and a trophy presentation on Bank Holiday Monday.
