Daventry Town 1 Kidsgrove Athletic 1 (FA Trophy extra preliminary round) . By Mike Tebbitt
Cup football has not been Daventry Town’s forte so far this season but Arron Parkinson’s men at least managed to snatch a replay from Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Kidsgrove Athletic at the Elderstubbs.
A defensive mistake by Kidsgrove full back Alex Morris enabled Kieran Fitzgerald to equalise for the Town in the 80th minute when scoring for the first time since his brief sojourn with Rugby Town.
At the start of the new campaign Daventry had fallen at the first hurdle against both Boldmere St.Michaels and Evesham United in the initial stages of the FA Cup and the Southern League’s Cup competition.
Scoring goals have become a bit of a problem for the Purple Army. Last season’s first ten matches produced 35 goals whilst the 2019-20 tally at a similar point stands at a more one dozen successful strikes.
For the entire first half it seemed unlikely that the Town would add to their tally. Kidsgrove dominated the entire first half and deservedly took the lead in the 25th minute through big No.9 Reuben Wiggins-Thomas.
A simple tap-in came his way after a pinpoint cross from man-of-the-match Kingsley Adu- Gyamfi who has played mnost of his football in the USA. His name may be a mouthfull but on the pitch he was very much a handfull!
Something needed to change after the interval and to his credit manager Parkinson made full use of a strong bench by bringing on Aaron King, Adam Creaney and Taylor Orosz before the hour was out.
The changes had the desired effect with Daventry looking far more dangerous as an attacking force and it came as no real surprise when Fitzgerald squared matters in the closing stages to trigger off a Monday night replay back in the Potteries.
In the dying seconds both “Fitzy” and Adam Confue had chances to clinch another home tie in the Trophy against Wisbech in the preliminary round a fortnight later. On the plus side all three yellow cards went to Kidsgrove players with no Town players incurring the referee’s wrath.
