SPALDING UNITED 1 DAVENTRY TOWN 1

Improving Daventry Town were denied a first win in two months when Spalding United scored a last-minute equaliser at the Halley Stewart Field on Saturday.

Report by Mike Tebbitt

The late goal from Stefan Broccoli also meant the Town failed to leapfrog both Wisbech Town and Yaxley and move out of the NPL Midlands Division relegation zone.

Meanwhile results elsewhere went in Daventry’s favour with none of the teams outside the top five achieving the maximum three points. League leaders Halesowen took pride of place with a 5-1 win at Yaxley.

As against Ilkeston in the FA Trophy three weeks earlier, the Purple Army got off to a flying start with a goal inside seven minutes.

Nat Gornal-Tyler, the Town’s only significant pre-season signing, delivered the goods!

Taylor Orosz’s pinpoint corner was met with a sweet left-footed volley from Gornal-Tyler and that’s how the scoreline stood for the next 83 minutes until Broccoli followed up a long range effort by Jordan Macleod.

There were plenty of plusses though as the Town themselves had scored for the first time in more than six hours’ football when retaining the starting line-up which held Ilkeston to a 0-0 draw in the Trophy.

Recalled full backs Dan Childs and Aiden Print have added pace to the defence but goals remain in short supply despite a more attacking approach in recent weeks.

Captain Ross Harris headed just over the Tulips bar in the 18th minute, James Martin made a good save at the other end and Macleod shunned a one-on-one chance which should have restored parity.

Luke Emery (arguing) and Martin (timewasting) picked up unnecessary second half yellow cards and mid-table Spalding came more and more into a keenly contested encounter.

Then Broccoli’s last-minute lifeline for the home side prevented Arron Parkinson’s men going ahead of both Wisbech and Yaxley whilst inexperienced Histon remain at the foot of the step four table.

The Lilywhites ran out 5-1 winners at the Elderstubbs in an FA Cup clash in August after scoring four goals without reply in the second half but have struggled in recent weeks. A last gasp penalty brought a 3-3 draw with Shepshed Dynamo on Saturday.
